Tallie

AS A CHILD
Left with near strangers while her mom worked two or three jobs.

AN ABUSIVE MARRIAGE
Marrying far too young, only to discover a man's cruelty she didn't know could exist.
Narrowly escaping, then landing in another disastrous situation from which she had run.

RISKING HER LIFE TO HAVE A BABY
Painful memories ripped at her heart, as jagged as the physical pain that had ravaged her body as she endured miscarriage after miscarriage before the doctor declared she was putting her own life at risk. Time and again, she had seen the disappointment in Pierce's eyes because she couldn't give him the one thing he wanted most--an heir to the Stratford fortune. And his mother made sure Tallie realized her failure. He'll never really love you. You're not our kind. He can have any woman he wants. Why would he want the likes of you?

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN
Beaten down under the constant harangue and sense of failure, Tallie finally took the money Portia Stratford offered and snuck away. She left without even saying good-bye.

IS SHE BEING WATCHED?
And lately, she felt like she was being watched. Was it her imagination triggering the fear? Or had her latest stopping place been discovered?

BERNIE STUBBORNLY SETS OUT TO BUILD A NEW LIFE
Bernie pulled to a stop in front of
the tavern and cut the engine. He
sat for a moment as doubts swirled through his mind. Why would a beautiful woman change her life for
a struggling cop gathering kids from broken homes? He had to somehow convince her of the nobility of this dream. Surely he could still dredge
up some Irish charm that would convince her to at least think about what he was going to propose.
"Do you want to trade working
in a tavern for a house with
a white picket fence?"

WITH A WOMAN RUNNING
FROM HER PAST
"I've never been a mom. And I have...history." Tallie clutched the order pad in her hand. Bernie's grin was Tallie's undoing. That was why she agreed to his proposal.
Or maybe it was because of the chill that crept up her spine when she ran through the darkness to her car and peered through the windows before climbing inside.

Bernie

A WILD IRISH ROGUE
Bernie O'Shea grinned at his buddy as they maneuvered around the pickups and aging cars already crowding the street in front of an older ranch-style house. Looked like every off-duty cop in the county was here. "Ah, Denny, we're gonna have fun tonight. I can feel it in my Irish bones."

TEMPTS TROUBLE ONE TIME TOO MANY
Bernie sat chained in the back of a police cruiser on the way to the county jail and arraignment in front of a judge, cursing his fiery Irish temper. He had no intention of accepting Randall Weston's "offer," but he could have played along for a while to gain more details of the baby-selling scheme.

AND COMES FACE TO FACE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES
Bernie wondered if his grandfather had come to call or just sent the attorney. Part of him wanted to see his grandparents, but he was also ashamed to face them with what had happened. However, the same Irish stubbornness that drove him to take risks gave him the backbone to face the consequences. So he took a deep breath and squared his shoulders...As the lock of the door clicked behind him, Bernie stared at a stranger with slicked back hair and an expensive suit lounging in one of the hard wooden chairs. Harry Latimer eyed Bernie critically. "You got your mangy Irish hide in a bit of trouble, son."

WHO'S A FRIEND?
"Liam O'Leary, a fellow Irishman, just wanting to talk." The man held out a hand. "...Latimer said you had more Irish than to wallow in self-pity, but guess he was wrong."

AND WHO'S AN ENEMY?
"You got balls, O'Shea, but I'm not sure about brains. First you spit in Weston's face when he offers you easy money. Then you beat a rap for killing a woman, only to investigate yourself for that same charge. I'd take the money and leave the country." The man shook his head. "By the way, thanks for the backup." ...When Aaron Swaggerty drove away, Bernie figured the man offered some smart advice. But his damn Irish sense of justice wouldn't leave this case alone.
